More and more, clubs are turning to technology to fill the void, and cut the cost of expensive trips to watch promising youngsters. In the past year, the leading football data companies have turned their focus to player recruitment and are pushing their products hard, believing it is an area of immense potential growth over the next decade. ManU's coffers swelled significantly with the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid. Rumors indicate the club is looking at a young Brazilian midfielder, Douglas Costa, as a possible mid-term replacement of the departed Portuguese superstar. Douglas has been compared to a young Ronaldinho.

Douglas has just completed his first year with Gremio's senior squad and due to the attention he generated with superb exhibitions of his skills, signed him to a new contract tying him to the club until 2013.

Other clubs presumably interested in Douglas include Liverpool, Inter de Milan and the deep-pocketed Real Madrid (well, with the aid of Spanish banks).

Love him or hate him, there is no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo is an exceptionally talented football player who rose to great heights and became a superstar in the Premier League. He has yet to be presented formally by his new club, Real Madrid, but his future team-mate Kaka has already drawn a crowd of over 40,000 to his official presentation at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. No doubt, the crowd to receive Ronaldo will be much greater.

This raises a question for the Premier League now that one of its superstars has left: who will take his place? Who will rise above the ranks in terms of on the field performance and off the field celebrity status?

Some players may have the skills and abilities to play football but lack the charisma or personality to rise to the level of superstar that Ronaldo achieved.

How will his absence affect his former club, Manchester United, long considered perhaps the best in the world and in the Premier League?
